The Business Challenge
Computer Sciences Corporation's goal was to make employee information available to all employees in an easy to use, cost-effective and accurate manner. The company's 60,000 employees are based at more than 800 facilities and customer sites primarily in the United States, Europe, South Africa, Southeast Asia and Australia. The task was to build an online company phone book tracking all of the employees worldwide. This would gather information from an external database payroll system and integrate it with skills information maintained in Notes databases by each of CSC's worldwide divisions.
Axceler Solution
The company's Lotus Notes installation, used for project management and other applications, offered a logical solution for a company-wide online phone book. Axceler Notrix was the best solution in handling the high volume data integration from an external database to all the Notes databases located throughout the organization. At high speed and without complex programming, CSC built their online phone book by extracting key information from its Oracle Server-based employee database into multiple Note databases.
Using special Lotus Notes forms included in Axceler Notrix, CSC can map fields and determine job frequency. CSC used a Axceler Notrix form to compare the Notes database with the SQL server database and then perform sophisticated data manipulation functions to update the Notes data -- applications not possible using Notes' programming features alone. In fact, Notrix was so simple that CSC installed the software and implemented the form in only a few hours.
The Divisional Notes databases and other Notes databases are now being consolidated with Axceler Notrix into a single database, presently with more than 50,000 documents.
The Result
This integrated information has become CSC's "Technology Access" system and is described as a "catalog of intellectual assets". In knowing where their employees are, how to find them and what their skill set, in terms of technology and industry experience is, managers are able to bring along the right expertise to various projects. CSC's marketing staff also relies on this information to direct their efforts and provide accurate information to customers.
By enabling CSC to distribute frequent updates to employee listing via Notes, giving employees access to the most current information about their colleagues, the Axceler Solution saved the company more than $60,000 a year in printing costs.
CSC also makes use of Notrix in some of the Notes infrastructure management operations, and recognizes the value that Axceler products have added to their infrastructure. Michael Wright, computer scientist who is involved with the data design, and project implementation, enjoys working with Axceler Notrix, stating that it is "easy to use and has a pleasant GUI interface. We like working with Axceler, they know what they are doing and are good people."
